Paraplegia Claims

Paraplegia is the loss of movement and sensation in the lower part of the body. As well as the legs the trunk is sometimes affected. Victims of paraplegia have often been involved in very serious accidents at work or road traffic accidents.

There are few conditions which impact day to day life as much as paraplegia. Previously healthy and mobile individuals are suddenly left unable to walk, which may leave them unable to work and in need of comprehensive care in their home.

Dealing with paraplegia is psychologically and physically tough but it can also be financially difficult, and compensation can help.

Paraplegia explained

Paraplegia is a result of damage to the nervous system, usually after trauma to the vertebrae at the top of the spine and below. It affects the legs and sometimes the trunk, but not the arms. There are varying degrees of paraplegia and victims will be affected differently depending on how many vertebrae have been injured, and their position on the spinal cord.

For example those who have been left with paraplegia following injuries to the top portion of their spine may be left with poor abdominal muscle control, but those with lower injuries will still retain good control of their abdominal muscles.

Symptoms which can affect anyone with paraplegia include:

  • Loss of sensation
  • Loss of motor function
  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction
  • Loss of sexual function
  • Problems with blood pressure and body temperature
  • Inability to sweat on lower part of body
