Tinnitus and its symptoms

Tinnitus is a common condition which affects approximately a fifth of people aged between 55 and 65. However it is also often seen in those who work in noisy industries – manufacturing, demolition or ship building for example.

The main symptoms of tinnitus are a noise in the ear as well as loss of hearing function. How much hearing is lost will depend on the person and noises most commonly reported by sufferers include:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • Whistling
  • Insect-type noises

Tinnitus can be caused by exposure to loud sounds over a long period of time, or can sometimes be triggered by exposure to a small number of high intensity sounds. People who work in noisy environments without the right ear protection are more vulnerable to tinnitus than most.

If you work with loud equipment then your employer is obliged to provide items such as:

  • Ear plugs
  • Ear defenders

If they fail to do so and you develop a hearing condition, you will be able to claim compensation.
